In African-American culture, the term funk literally means “bad body odor,” dirt or sperm. It points out a link with the Earth, and, sometimes by analogy, some connection with the wise, as well as the sacred, spirits of long gone ancestors — really meaning authenticity, spontaneity — integrity. “Funky” can apply to any rustic, hand-crafted object with an essential function. Around 1900, the familiar “funk” word was already in use to describe the bodily stink of sweat or wind.

This is why, in 1907, “Funky Butt,” a song composed by Buddy Bolden, who was perhaps the most essential of jazz founders, gave its name to the Union Sons Hall on Presidio Street, a little New Orleans jazz club where the great musician once won fame. Legend has it that his trombone player, William Cornish, once improvised these words during a show:

Funky butt, funky butt, take it away,
Open up the windows and let the bad air out.

In the Nineteenth Century many slaves from Haiti and Cuba had converged on this small Louisiana town bound to become “The capital city of the Caribbean.” Those slaves consistently brought along to catholic Louisiana some afro-creole traditions then forbidden elsewhere in the United States, including syncopated rhythms used in their animist rituals (voodoo, santería), which featured trances: it was these liturgical musics that formed the deep roots of jazz and funk music alike.

Our track selection here was guided through by this leaning towards syncopation, which took off in the United States after World War II. In some cases, the mere will to create an original, danceable rhythm was enough for inclusion here. As in jazz and nascent soul music, the will to free body and soul was unswervingly linked to the rhythmic substance, as well as with an intention to express emotions freely, with no compromise — and no apologies.

"It is out of the world mass that the poet chooses, elects what he must preserve, sing, save, what fits his song. And the rhythm is ritual force, as well as a lever for conscience."
Édouard Glissant
